The Marshmallow Tower Challenge
The Marshmallow Tower Challenge:
After planning, teams have eight minutes to build the tallest freestanding structure with the marshmallow on top.
Materials Needed Per Group:
- 20 sticks of dry spaghetti
- tape
- string or yarn
- marshmallows
- 1 Engineering Design Process Sheet per group (or 1 per student)
Procedures and Expectations:
- Place students in groups of 2 to 3.
- Introduce challenge
- Hand out Engineering Design Process Sheets
- Give students 1 to 2 min. to ask questions
- Have students individually think about a design for their tower
- Ask students to write, and/or draw a picture of their design model (plan)
- Give students a few minutes to share their models (plans) with their small groups and choose one plan for the group to build
- Hand out or have students pick up supplies
- When their model is complete, have students sketch and/or write about it
- Have students brainstorm ways they can improve their model or design
- Have students write and/or sketch their improvements
