The Marshmallow Tower Challenge

The Marshmallow Tower Challenge:

After planning, teams have eight minutes to build the tallest freestanding structure with the marshmallow on top. 

 

Materials Needed Per Group:

  • 20 sticks of dry spaghetti
  • tape
  • string or yarn
  • marshmallows
  • 1 Engineering Design Process Sheet per group (or 1 per student)

 

Procedures and Expectations:

  • Place students in groups of 2 to 3.
  • Introduce challenge
  • Hand out Engineering Design Process Sheets
  • Give students 1 to 2 min. to ask questions
  • Have students individually think about a design for their tower
  • Ask students to write, and/or draw a picture of their design model (plan)
  • Give students a few minutes to share their models (plans) with their small groups and choose one plan for the group to build
  • Hand out or have students pick up supplies
  • When their model is complete, have students sketch and/or write about it
  • Have students brainstorm ways they can improve their model or design 
  • Have students write and/or sketch their improvements
