When Would I Use SpeedGrader?

SpeedGrader makes it easy to evaluate individual student assignments and group assignments quickly.

You can use SpeedGrader to:

  • Sort submissions by student and hide student names for anonymous grading
  • View submission details for each student, including resubmitted assignments
  • Use rubrics to assign grades  
  • Leave feedback for your students
  • Track your grading progress and hide assignments while grading
  • View submissions in moderated assignments

Where to Find SpeedGrader

You can access SpeedGrader directly from the

  • gradebook.
  • graded assignment or quiz.
  • discussion.

 

1.  You can access an assignment in SpeedGrader directly from the Gradebook.

In Course Navigation, click the Grades link.

2.  Canvas allows you to access SpeedGrader from an assignment, quiz, or graded discussion.

Click the Assignment title to open the assignment.

SpeedGrader will be available in every graded assignment, including quizzes or graded discussions.

Within a graded assignment or quiz, the SpeedGrader link will appear in the sidebar under Related Items.

Within a graded discussion, click the Settings icon [1] and click the SpeedGrader link [2].

View SpeedGrader

For each student, SpeedGrader has five areas:

  1. View student submissions (text entries, website URLs, media recordings, and/or file uploads); preview supported file types in Canvas DocViewer; review other file format submissions using the document previewer or Google Preview
  2. Assign a grade based on your preferred assessment method (points or percentage)
  3. View Rubric to assist with grading (if one is added to the assignment)
  4. View comments created by you or the student about the assignment
  5. Create text, video, and/or audio commentary for the student

The SpeedGrader menu includes several tools and resources to assist with grading assignments.

The left side of the menu includes general settings and options:

The center of the menu bar includes assignment information and overall grading information. Assignment information includes the name of the assignment [1], assignment due date [2], and the name of the course [3].

To view the assignment details, click the name of the assignment. The assignment details page also lets you download all student submissions Links to an external site. for the assignment.  

To return to the Course Home Page, click the name of the course.

Grading information includes assignment statistics, including the number of assignments that have been graded out of the total number of submissions [4] and the average score and percentage [5]. You can use this information to keep track of your grading progress.
