Using Canvas for Math
Canvas has built-in tools that make creating content pages, activities, and content pages for math a little easier.
Insert a Math Equation - You can type the oh-so difficult math formulas, fractions, etc. using the Math Equation tool in the Canvas rich text editor.
Or, if you prefer, you can use the WIRIS external tool to type equations.
Graph Builder - This tool allows you to add graphic equations to your Canvas page.
These are simply the basic tools built into Canvas. Click on the remaining tabs on this page to learn about incorporating external math tools into your Canvas course.
Below are resources from the Canyons curriculum map that can be incorporated into Canvas.
While enVisionmath2.0 from Pearson Realize is the primary tool we use to teach math, the Instructional Supports Department has provided a list of quality online math programs that can also be used to support math instruction. These lists and descriptions of the tools are found in the grade level curriculum maps.
Online Math Programs (p.233 of the 4th grade curriculum map)
Approved Elementary Math Software (p.239 of the 4th grade curriculum map)
enVisionmath2.0 Math Tools (p.276 of the 4th grade curriculum map)
In your Canvas course, you can create buttons or links to these resources. Some can also be embedded right onto a content page using a tool called H5P Links to an external site.:

Canvas can also be used to house navigation, buttons, links and embedded content tied to outside math tools like enVisionmath2.0. Remember, one major benefit of using Canvas in your classroom is its ability to be a your home base. Students and parents only need to remember to log in to Canvas to easily access lessons and tools from all over the web. Use Canvas to organize your content and resources to make navigating them easy on your students.
Course Navigation - Add Pearson Realize to the navigation of your math course in Canvas:
Buttons - Create images that you can link to frequently used web tools, like the Pearson Realize login page or the enVisionmath2.0 Math Tools:
Links - Link to specific Pearson tools and pages on any content page in Canvas. Students will still have to log in, but a link created in a student's account will take them directly to the correct resource once they are logged in. To link to the Pearson eText for Students, copy the link on the page that says "Open in New Window".
- Example: Miss Winner's Math Class
Embedding - Download pdf files from Pearson and embed them on a content page in Canvas. Students can view the page on Canvas or download the pdf to work on digitally or to print.
Nearpod - Use screenshots to create an enVisionMath2.0 Nearpod presentation that can be embedded into your Canvas course.
- Example: Miss Winner's Math Class
Sub Plans - If you know you're going to be absent for a day, create your sub plans right in Canvas. You can include any of the tools mentioned above to easily guide your student through Pearson content.
