Each week, CSD's Instructional Supports Department will be posting professional development (PD) resources via our social media accounts. These PD resources are designed to be short and to the point, and provide links that share more detailed information and directions for educators who would like to learn more. In addition to being shared through social media, each weekly bite of PD will be added to this page.

October 26 - Sharing Content in Canvas Using Direct Share & Canvas Commons
Canvas provides multiple ways for you to share and import content into your Canvas courses.

  • Direct Share allows you to share content between your courses or with colleagues.
  • Canvas Commons is a global repository where you can share and/or find Canvas course content to import directly into your Canvas course.

November 2 - Utah's Online Library
Utah students and teachers have access to a rich collection of digital resources through Utah's Online Library.

  • Utah's Online Library provides educators and students free access to high-quality reference collections such as EBSCO, Gale Reference Collection, World Book and Preschool Pioneer." (onlinelibrary.uen.org).

November 9 - Crisis De-Escalation
Did you know that it is easier to prevent a serious behavior before it occurs than to deal with it after it has happened?  When behavior issues occur in class, it can be disheartening for us as teachers as well as disruptive to the learning for that student and others in the class. The Crisis De-Escalation slideshow Links to an external site. shares tips that can help prevent behavior problems before they occur and identify how to better handle the ones that do happen.

November 16 - Google Like a Pro
Looking for a way to improve your online searching skills and "Google like a pro?" You are in luck! The News Literacy Project and Cindy Otis, author of True or False: A CIA Analyst's Guide to Spotting Fake News, developed an infographic that provides 8 tips that are designed to help you search and find specific content online.

November 23 - iPads and Document Cameras for teaching

Looking to step up your engagement in your classroom? Check out how to integrate a document camera or iPad into your teaching routine and the pros and cons of each. 

November 30 - Hour of Code

Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. Hour of Code is December 6-12, 2021 Check out the link for more information on how you can implement Hour of Code in your classroom.

December 7 - Behavior Momentum

Did you know that behavior goes where reinforcements flow?
Behavior Momentum is a principle which gets a student to do something unlikely (low probability) by having them do likely things first (high probability). Check out the link to a flyer below with more information.

Did you know that Mindfulness improves attention and reduces feelings of stress?
You have probably heard about mindfulness in education, but may be wondering what it is, benefits it has for your and your students, and using it in your class. Follow the link below for mindfulness tips and tricks, quick

January 4 - CSD Film Festival

Looking for examples of great films to inspire this year's #csdfilmfestival entry? Check out films from previous years on our Film Festival playlists on the CSD EdTech YouTube channel!

January 11 - Assessing Your Assessments

Did you know that different learning types of learning targets require different modes of assessment? The recent assessing your assessments bite-sized PDs have been created to help teachers: 1. identify the types of questions that should be included on the assessment, 2. write effective multiple choice questions, 3. use quiz statistics to inform your teaching and improve tests and quizzes. January 18 - The 2 x 10 Strategy

Want a great way to connect or reconnect with students? 2 x 10 is the way to go.  TThe 2x10 strategy is an excellent way to connect with any student at any time. Simply spend 2 minutes a day for 10 days talking with a student about whatever non-academic thing they are interested in. Check out this flyer for other considerations.

February 1 - Students Annotations in Canvas

Did you know that Canvas has a student annotations feature? This feature allows the teacher to upload a file to Canvas that the student can ten, without leaving Canvas, mark up using the built-in annotation tools. Check out the links provided to learn more about this feature and how to use it on a desktop computer versus mobile device.

February 8 - Nine Elements of Accessible Content

In her book, The Perfect Blend, Michele Eaton shared nine elements of accessible content. Understanding and implementing these elements, when applicable, can help teachers ensure that their digital content is accessible to all students. February 15 - Digital Citizenship and Online Safety

Talking about online safety and digital citizenship should be an integral part of your communication with students. Whether it be cyberbullying, screen time, online safety, or distracted driving, the student made videos on this playlist Links to an external site. can help you jump start those conversations.

February 22 - Active Listening

What's a great way to build relationships and defuse potentially volatile situation? The art of listening.
Active listening is a set of strategies to learn how to listen to people in a meaningful way. This is a great way to build relationships with students and other adults, build a warm and welcoming climate in your classroom, and a great de-escalation strategy. Check out the link to learn how to incorporate active listening into your teaching and everyday life.

March 1 - Parenting in a Digital Age

Parenting in the digital world can be hard to navigate. Here are some resources to support parents and caregivers that are looking for resources and advice on all things media and technology. This playlist Links to an external site. includes four videos addressing many frequently asked questions.

March 15 - Virtual UCET

CSD teachers, did you know that this year's UCET conference is offering a hybrid option for educators who are not able to attend the conference in-person? Conference sessions such as spotlights, ignite, over the shoulder and keynotes will be streamed and recorded and the videos will be available online at ucet.org/conference. March 22 - Restorative Practices

Restorative Practices is an approach to building student relationships, improving student discipline structures, and strengthening school community that has been adopted in Canyons School District since 2019. However, with the many things thrown at education since then, it may be time for a refresher. Check out this one page resource for a good overview of Restorative Practices.
