Canvas Introduction
Learning Intentions
In this module participants will gain an understanding of what Canvas is and why Canvas can be a benefit in the classroom.
Success Criteria
Participants will know they are successful when they can:
- define what Canvas is.
- understand how courses are created by the CSD IT Department.
- know who to contact if a student is missing from their Canvas course.
- help students log in to their Canvas accounts.
Canvas: An Overview
Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) designed specifically for K-12 teachers and students. Canvas is an easy-to-use and cloud-based that connects all the digital tools and resources teachers use into one simple place. It integrates seamlessly with hundreds of apps, empowering teachers and students with countless tools to make teaching and learning easier and more fun. The presentation below suggests some of the reasons you might find Canvas useful for you and your students.
Why Use Canvas?

Teacher Canvas Courses
Task: Locate a Canvas course that you can work in throughout this course.
Teachers in Canyons School District do not create their own core courses. Initial course creation is managed by the IT Department through a sync with Skyward. These courses are found in each teacher's Canvas account.
Missing a course? Contact your school's Ed Tech Coach who will work with IT to let them know there is an issue with your account, or you can submit a ticket to IT for help (footprints@canyonsdistrict.org).
Student Account Creation
Students are automatically loaded to Canvas through the Canvas/Skyward sync that occurs each night. If a new student is missing from your course, they will be uploaded (usually) within 48 after they register with Canyons School District. Regularly new students will be added, and students who have moved or left your class will be removed from your courses.
Missing a student from your course? If you still have problems, talk to your school secretary. She/he can double check that the student was registered correctly and is active in all the correct courses in Skyward. Still not seeing your student? Submit a ticket to IT for help (footprints@canyonsdistrict.org).
Starting a New Course
If you are wanting to create a course that is not connected to Skyward, you can start and create a new course from the Dashboard. New courses are created as course shells to host courses for your institution. However, some institutions will have this option disabled and instead provide courses to faculty automatically via SIS (student information system) imports.
When you create a course from the Dashboard, you will be added to the course as an instructor automatically. Click here for instructions on how to start a new course (Links to an external site.).
Missing the "Start New Course" button? If you are trying to create a new course and don't see the Start New Course button email camille.cole@canyonsdistrict.org and she can fix that for you.
