Corner Canyon High School Marine Bio Current Events
Overview: “Why are we doing this? Scientific knowledge is an important tool for understanding the world around us as it exists today. A good knowledge of science allows us to make more informed decisions and choices, and gives us a window into our future.
Knowing just about the science of the past is not good enough. Today, it is more and more important for you to understand the nature of science and how it applies to our lives today. To this end, we will be undertaking an examination of current scientific events in Marine Biology/Oceanography throughout the semester. With a solid knowledge of past and present your understanding of the scientific world will be enhanced.
All students are strongly encouraged to regularly read or watch the news (including local news, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, etc) and to read both online articles and periodicals (Time, Newsweek, US News, Reuters, Huffington Post, National Geographic, ScienceDaily or Science News etc) and newspapers (Deseret News, Salt Lake Tribune, New York Times, etc.).
Choose an article that is science-based, research-backed, and marine-centered. You will need to read the entire article, and find some additional resources that back up its claims.
Current Event Requirements:
This experience is student centered. Do not expect class time to get this done. If at any time throughout this process you are unsure or have questions, you need to take the initiative and talk with me. This will be considered a substantial part of your grade.
Due Dates: To avoid a glut of projects to grade, I will be randomly choosing students to turn in their assignments each week. You will have a minimum of 2 weeks to get your presentation done and uploaded to Canvas. For each class day it is late, your score will be deducted one grade mark. My due date__________________________________
Your Google slides presentation must include these elements:
1. One News Story:This must be a major US or International story (see above). You are strongly encouraged to read more than one news source to gain a solid knowledge base about the story. Your teacher can help you with your story selection and give you ideas or point you in the right direction. You must include a link to the original article in your presentation, and the first slide must have the title, author, and publication on it.
For your story, you must have the following information on your slides (Rubric):
- A summary of the basic elements of the story (what happened, where, who is involved, etc.)
- What is the significance of this story? What impact does it have on the environment and ecosystems, ocean, animals, and people; or what potential impact could this have on the future.
. Visual Images: Each of your slides must have a visual related to the story (map, photograph, illustration etc.). You can put the image after the informational slide. You must give credit for the image, i.e. the photographer or website on which it appears.
2. Point of Persuasion:Pick your side of the issue and take a stance on it. Present this
information in at least one slide (more than likely you will need more than this). You need to persuade your teacher that your stance on the issue is informed, well thought out and correct. That means you should have some background on the issue. Remember, all stories have more than one point of view. Each event impacts people differently. Your task on this slide is to show you understand the story as well as its implications on our scientific world.
3. Future Implications:You must have at least one slide that will explain the future issues that might arise if this issue is not handled correctly or it if it is handled correctly. What benefits are there?
4. Citing Sources: Follow thedirections to cite your sources. 1. For images – include source name and website 2. For news sources - Cite using standard MLA format. This will be included as a separate slide.
Turning in the assignment: Please submit your google slide link on Canvas. Please make sure that you share the assignment with “anyone at canyons district that has the link”. (Don’t share it with your teacher!) I will be compiling the links on Canvas, and for a grade you will need to look at the other students’ presentations. All information your classmates provide on these topics will be up for grabs on tests and quizzes!!!!
