1. As a table team, use the descriptions and dates on the 16 explorers cards to put them in chronological order. Create a time line of the history of ocean exploration on a large piece of butcher paper. Write the name of the explorer, what they did, and what year(s). Draw an illustration for each one.
2. Use the internet to research the Okeanos/Nautilus Live ROV and James Cameron’s Mariana Trench dive and add them both to your timeline.
(2 points for each event included. 4 points for adequate descriptions of all events and illustrations)
3. Answer the questions below using both the cards and the reading passage handed out in class.
Analysis/Discussion Questions
- Who were the earliest ocean explorers? How did they explore?
- If exploring the ocean was so dangerous in ancient times, why do you think people did it?
3. Describe at least one important person, place, and discovery in the history of ocean exploration.
- Which ocean exploration card is the most interesting to you? Explain.
- How have the techniques and goals of ocean exploration changed over time?
6. Extension: Research how many people are dependent on the ocean for their main source of food today. Are there any concerns or problems right now or about the future?
