Projecting Your iPad
Teaching from the iPad frees teachers to move around the room while delivering instruction. There are several ways to enable projecting from your iPad. See some ideas in the following table:
AirPlay to Mac | Works with iOS 14 or later and OS Monterey. Note: CSD-owned Mac computers do not yet use OS Monterey. | Free
AppleTV | Wirelessly projects the audio and video from your Mac or iOS device. | $179-$199
AirServer Links to an external site. | Wirelessly mirrors your iOS or Android device onto your Mac or PC. Computer must be wired to the projector. | $7.99-$11.99
Reflector 2 Links to an external site. | Wirelessly mirrors your iOS or Android device onto your Mac or PC. Computer must be wired to the projector. | $19.99
Doceri Links to an external site. |
Use your iPad to wirelessly control your computer. Also serves as an interactive whiteboard and recording tool. Computer must be wired to the projector. Contact your Instructional Coach to purchase at a discount. |
$30 | |
QuickTime Player |
This is not a wireless option, but still allows you to project your iPad. Plug your iPad into your computer using the iPad charging cable; open QuickTime Player on your computer; tap "Cancel" if something pops up; tap "File" > "New movie recording;" tap the down arrow by the recording button and change the camera input to be your iPad. |
Free but connected to laptop. |
Apple TV
Many classrooms in Canyons School District are equipped with an Apple TV to allow teachers to easily project their laptops and iPads. Read the instructions below to learn how to use an Apple TV to project your iPad.
- Make sure your AppleTV is on. (It will have a light on in the front.) If it is off, press any button on your AppleTV remote.
- Connect the iPad to the wireless network. There are several wireless networks in our schools. Start with the CSD-AUTH network, but if you do not see your AppleTV listed, try the other two networks listed below.
- Most Apple TVs have been connected to the CSD-Auth wireless network. Your district username (first.last) and password (the same you use for email) are used to access this network.
- Some Apple TVs have been connected to the CSD-ATV wireless network. To access the password, contact your school's field tech.
- Some Apple TVs are still on the Canyonair wireless network. For the network password, contact your school's field tech.
- Open the Control Center on your iPad and tap "AirPlay Mirroring" or "Screen Mirroring" (this is done by swiping down from the top right corner on newer models of iPads. However, older models might have you swipe up from the bottom).
4. Find the AppleTV with your room number, and connect.
5. Some Apple TVs require an on-screen code or a password to connect.
- If an on-screen code is required, this code will be displayed on the screen you are trying to display on.
- If a password is required, use the following formula:
@tv_[room]
Example: @tv_2401 (all lower case)
Other Apps to Consider
Projecting an iPad might be a good option for displaying content to students that are accessible only on your iPad.
- Try using your Camera on your iPad as a walking document camera. Walk to a student's desk, open the camera, and display the work a student has done.
- Using digital whiteboard apps such as IPEVO Presenter (Free), IPEVO Whiteboard (Free), and Doceri, or note-taking apps like Notability, and GoodNotes can then allow you to annotate on pictures of student work or other worksheets as well as giving you a blank space to use a digital whiteboard feature.
- See the Canyons U Screencasting Course to learn about more great whiteboard apps such as Explain Everything Basics (formerly ExplainEDU) and Educreations. These apps cost money but are more powerful and allow you to annotate while presenting to the whiteboard.
