Active Viewing Strategies
Videos can be a great tool for instructional use, as they appeal to visual and auditory learners, and can show things that are hard to convey through text. However, as educators, we must remember that video viewing is an inherently passive experience.
Using a video in the classroom is more that just pushing "Play." We should be using active viewing strategies, taken from proven literacy strategies, to improve comprehension and help students make deeper connections (adapted from Common Sense Media, 2016).
Key Questions to Encourage Active Viewing:
- How can I prepare my classroom to ensure that my classroom is primed for optimal video viewing?
- What are the most effective uses of video for classroom instruction?
- How can viewing be an active and not passive learning experience?
- What are some strategies to engage students before, during, and after viewing?
