Chromebook Basics
Chromebook Basics
A Chromebook is not required for you to be able to access Google Drive. However, because Chromebooks are prevalent in our schools and at our professional development classes, it is helpful to understand how to log on to them with your District account. For this part of the module, it is beneficial to have a Chromebook to practice with. For the remainder of the module, however, it is recommended you use your teacher laptop.
Logging On to a Chromebook
For this part of the module, you will need a Chromebook that is connected to the Internet. If you check out a Chromebook from your school and try this at home, be sure you know the name of your home wireless network and the password. The Chromebook will prompt you to connect to the Internet before you can log in:
When you turn on your Chromebook, you will be prompted to enter your Canyon's CSDDocs credentials. CSDDocs is the Canyons instance of Google Drive. In other words, all Canyons School District employees and students have a District-owned and -provided Google account referred to as CSDDocs. To log in to your CSDDocs account, use the following login credentials:
Teacher Login: Username: District Active Directory Username
Password: District Active Directory Password
|
Student Login: Username: Student Access Username
Password: Student Access Password
|
Tip: How to Print Student Logins and Passwords Links to an external site.
The first time you log on to a particular Chromebook, it may take a few extra seconds while the Chromebook processes your personal settings. You will also be prompted to "Accept" Google's user agreement and select a profile picture. Your bookmarks and web browser layout will be preserved from device to device so you always have the same web-browsing experience. Once you have logged on, the Chrome browser will open automatically and will redirect to the District or school website (depending on where the device was set up).
Chromebook Desktop
Every Chromebook is set up with immediate access to the G Suite for Education. G Suite for Education is a collection of tools similar to the Microsoft Office suite or Apple iWork suite. It includes Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more. On a Chromebook, these tools can be accessed via the dock. By selecting your profile picture, in the bottom right-hand corner of your desktop, you gain access to wireless connection, volume, battery life, logging off, and a variety of settings to help personalize your Chromebook.
Chromebook Keyboard & Trackpad
Keyboard shortcuts can be a huge timesaver, but you'll notice that some of the keys on the Chromebook keyboard are a little different. Done't worry. Your essential keyboard shortcuts are still available if you know what to type:
- "ctrl" + "z" = undo
- "ctrl" + "x"= cut
- "ctrl" + "c" = copy
- "ctrl" + "v" = paste
The Chromebook trackpad may be different from what you are used to as well. To learn more about it, watch the following video:
Chromebooks run using the Google Suite: Chrome, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, Drawings, and so much more. Canyons has created the CSDDocs domain (@csddocs.org) in order to create and manage all student and teacher accounts throughout the district.
