The Pharaohs

-
The ruler of ancient Egypt was called a PHARAOH. Most pharaohs were men but some well-known pharaohs, such as Nefertiti and Cleopatra, were women.
-
The type of government in ancient Egypt was called a THEOCRACY. This means that the ruler of a country or kingdom is also a religious leader. As the most important and powerful person in the kingdom, the pharaoh was not only the head of the government, but was also the high priest of every temple. The people of Egypt considered their pharaoh to be a half-man, half-god.
