Placing Events in Chronological Order

  • Organizing dates into CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER means to put them in the order in which they happened in history.  On a timeline, the space between each segment should represent the same amount of time. This is called an interval. Historians could use timelines at intervals of years, decades, or centuries. They could even be broken into months, days, or hours.

 

  • Having the intervals measured equally can help you place dates in the correct location on a timeline. Look at the following timeline about the Life and Inventions of Thomas Edison for practice.
  • Grab a scratch paper and number it 1-10. For each event from Edison's life, write the LETTER of where that event would be placed on this timeline. For example: 1. "Edison invents the carbon filament lamp. (1879)" means that this event occurred in 1879. The intervals on the timeline represent 5 years. 1879 would fall between 1875-1880, but closer to 1880.
