Heraldry and Coat of Arms

• In medieval times, many nobles wanted everyone to know how important they were.
• Since most people could not read, heraldry was invented.
• A heraldry was a design or short saying.
• They designed a Coat of Arms, that included the heraldry.
• A Coat of Arms is a unique design painted on a shield.
  • Each symbol on the coat of arms represents something that has an important meaning to that person or family.
• Each heraldry was unique and each part of the Coat of Arms had special meaning.

 

Look at this example of a Coat of Arms.  Examine it carefully to understand the meaning of each part.
