Keyboard Craze Introduction

Keyboard Craze

Changes are happening for 2021-22, we are now using Typing Club.  Please refer to the curriculum map for your grade for updates.  Updates will be coming shortly on this page and the rest of the Keyboarding course.

Keyboard Craze is a 70-lesson plan for helping children build speed and accuracy after they have learned the alphabetic keyboard.

The program is organized into seven lesson groups:

  • Technique Review Lessons
  • Alphabet Review Lessons
  • High Frequency Words Lessons
  • High Frequency Phrases Lessons
  • Speed Building Lessons
  • Number Keypad Lessons
  • Composition Lessons

Keyboard Craze was developed to follow Keyboard Chatter which is a 20-lesson curriculum for teaching the keyboard. Many of the teaching techniques used in Keyboard Craze are identical to the techniques used in Keyboard Chatter; therefore, a teacher who has taught students the keyboard using Keyboard Chatter will easily adjust to the Keyboard Craze lesson outlines because the format is identical and terminology is compatible. In addition, many of the poster, songs, and games that were used in Keyboard Chatter can be used very effectively in Keyboard Craze.

Before beginning this module, obtain your own copy of the Keyboard Craze binder. As you work through the module, follow along through the various sections of the binder. Elementary schools might not have any Keyboard Craze binders, so please contact the instructor of this course if you need a copy.

Note: Teachers have asked if it is possible to obtain an electronic copy of the Keyboard Craze curriculum. We are currently unable to do so, but we are discussing the possibility with Susan Boothe, the copyright owner.

Fourth or fifth grade teachers using Keyboard Craze will teach 30 minutes a day for 20 days at the beginning of the school year, just like teachers using Keyboard Chatter. As the manual suggests, "...there is more than enough material in the lessons and each can be productively used for two 15-minute lessons." Therefore, there is enough material in each lesson to teach for 30 minutes and stick to the same schedule as the other elementary keyboarding teachers in your school.

Keyboard Craze comes with Student Drill Sheets and Worksheets. Each lab being used for keyboarding should have a class set of these in a binder or bound as a book. The program comes with posters. One blown-up set per lab is recommended. Also included are games and activities, miscellaneous teaching aids, sample compliment cards, evaluation forms, and certificates.

Our keyboarding goal in grades 3-5 is to ensure proper technique with every student and give them the basics they need. Review of these skills will benefit any student. Even the most accomplished typist can benefit from slowing down and reviewing the basics.

Keyboard IconThe Importance of You in Keyboarding Instruction

As you teach keyboarding, remember that the teacher sets the tone for the class. Be excited! Make it fun! Add in your personality! Even drills and repetition can be fun if the teacher is into it! You are important to the success of keyboarding in Canyons School District!
