KBK (Keyboarding for Kids)

Keyboarding for Kids (KBK)

Changes are happening for 2021-22, we are now using Typing Club.  Please refer to the curriculum map for your grade for updates.  Updates will be coming shortly on this page and the rest of the Keyboarding course.

Once elementary teachers have completed the initial 20 days of Keyboard Chatter instruction, they will provide follow-up keyboarding instruction at least ten minutes once a week for the remainder of the year. More follow-up instruction and practice is even better!

Teachers should also follow up by reinforcing proper keyboarding technique whenever students use the computer keyboard for other projects and assignments. During follow-up activities teachers must continue to monitor for proper keyboarding technique. It is during follow-up instruction that keyboarding accuracy and speed will develop, after solid technique has been established.

Keyboarding for Kids (keyboardingonline.com Links to an external site.) by Ellsworth Publishing is the program each elementary school will be using for follow-up keyboarding instruction in grades 3-5. Keyboarding for Kids, also known as KBK, allows students to drill and practice the finger families and keyboarding techniques they have learned and increase speed and accuracy. KBK is not being used for initial keyboarding instruction because it does not teach technique like Keyboard Chatter does. Instead, it is a program for practice and for recording student progress.

The more consistently students practice, the more keyboarding technique will stick and students will improve.  In addition to specific KBK instructional time, teachers can use KBK as a self-starter in the computer lab. Or, if computers are available in classrooms, KBK can be a self-starter every day -- during attendance in the morning or as soon as the students come in from lunch or recess. It can also be used as a practice station during the ELA block, and it can be used for practice at home.

Keyboard IconWhy KBK?

  • KBK is web-based and does not require software installation or updating. The HTML5 version does not even require plug-ins!
  • KBK requires perfect accuracy before recording speed on practice lessons. This feature helps us continue to focus on technique before speed.
  • KBK prevents students from stopping to delete or correct errors, encouraging fluency.
  • KBK has a useful testing and reporting component.
  • Ellsworth Publishing has a history of great customer service.

Keyboard IconKBK Licenses

  • The Education Technology Department manages and pays for all District KBK accounts and licenses.
  • Each school may use as many licenses as needed for their currently enrolled students in grades 3-5. Please delete any students who are no longer at your school to preserve our licenses for those currently enrolled.
