Parent Introduction- Picture Walks

Dear Parents,

This unit brings together the language your children have been learning the past several months, and puts it into story contexts with a beginning, middle, and end. The first step before reading is to help students activate their background knowledge on a topic, and make a personal connection with it. Each lesson in this unit features a different story from the 1st grade literacy curriculum. As a lead up to the story, the format is that of a 'Picture Walk', which involves the child in a discussion that allows them to use their language to respond to questions, express opinions, and describe what they see.  They can also physically respond and point to the characters as the story is read. We hope this will be a fun experience for your child to encounter authentic cultural connections with the story themes.

The engagement section of the lesson will introduce them to additional character writing and practice of the basic strokes.
