Getting Started with Canvas

In this module, participants learn how to utilize the Canvas learning management system (LMS) to facilitate learning with technology. Participants will learn the basics of navigating and creating within Canvas according to the District style guide and best practices.

ISTE Standard: Facilitator

To meet this standard, educators facilitate learning with technology to support student achievement of the ISTE Standards for Students. Educators:

6a. Foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings.

6b. Manage the use of technology and student learning strategies in digital platforms, virtual environments, hands-on makerspaces or in the field.

6c. Create learning opportunities that challenge students to use a design process and computational thinking to innovate and solve problems.

6d. Model and nurture creativity and creative expression to communicate ideas, knowledge or connections.

Teachers who effectively use Canvas are Facilitators because they are able to "manage the use of technology and student learning strategies in digital platforms and virtual environments." They are able to utilize good course design, content page creation, and module organization to "foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings."

 

Learning Intentions

• I can build and publish a Canvas course with a homepage that follows the Canyons School District style guide.
• I can edit Canvas course navigation according to the Canyons School District style guide.
• I can create, add content to, and organize a Canvas module.
• I can create well-designed Canvas content pages that include a balance of text, multimedia, and interactive elements.
• I can import and share Canvas course templates and content.
