Module 1.3 - Social Media Groups & Chats
Social Media Groups & Chats
Joining social media groups and chats can help educators pursue professional interests by providing opportunities for them to actively participate in local and global learning networks (ISTE Standards for Educators 1b).
Twitter Ed Chats
For many educators, Twitter has become their social media network of choice for education-related sharing and collaboration. Groups of educators have created Ed Chats where they exchange ideas, ask questions, and discuss. Twitter chats are different from regular Twitter posts in that they are schedule for specific times and often focus on specific topics or questions. Groups follow and contribute to these chats by including a group hashtag (#) on every post. Click on the video below to learn more about how Twitter Chats work.
If you're new to Twitter, it can be difficult to know which Twitter Chats to follow. Most education-related chats are referred to as EdChats. Click on the links below for information on two of our favorite EdChats. The third image will take you to a list of ISTE's top 40 EdChats. You can also do a Google search for the top EdChats in your curriculum area.
Facebook Groups
Facebook isn't just a place where you grandparents can check up on your social life. It's also a great place to create groups where educators can share resources and participate in discussions. Most Facebook groups are private, so when you visit a group's page you'll need to request to join. Once the group's administrator accepts your request, you can explore and participate. Below are links to some examples of educator Facebook groups. You can also search Facebook or Google for more suggestions.
