The Grant Writing Process

 The Grant Writing Process

Project Based LearningPlanning Your Grant

By now you should have some ideas of projects and materials for which you would like to write a grant application. Choose one of your ideas to focus on, and select the grant that best suits your project and your timeline. Use the following planning sheet to help you plan your grant:

It is a good idea to work curriculum standards into your grant narrative. You may not need to list them on your application, but you can reference them in your writing so the readers know that your plan is student-centered and focused on increasing student achievement. The following links are good references for core curriculum and educational technology standards:

An important part of planning your grants is determining what equipment/supplies you will be requesting. If you are requesting technology for your classroom, you must ensure that the technology is approved and supported by the Canyons School District IT Department. Following is a link to IT's purchasing standards. This list can sometimes become out of date, so if you don't see what you're looking for, feel free to ask you Ed Tech Coach to help you.

WritingWriting Your Grant

Now that you have a plan, go to the website for the grant you have chosen to apply for. Download any needed materials and/or navigate to the application form online. Compose your grant narrative and complete your budget sheet and application form. Check to see if there are any other forms or requirements for the grant you have selected. Be sure you have completed all the grant requirements.

As you write, remember the grant writing strategies you learned about in this module:

  • Write concisely; don't ramble.
  • Be knowledgeable about what you are asking for in your grant.
  • Explain what devices/supplies you already have and how they are being used in your classroom.
  • Describe why an addition of devices/supplies would be even more effective in your classroom.
  • Make sure you follow the rules of the grant and follow the rubric if one is provided.
  • Keep it student centered -- students are number one!
  • Have a student-centered project in mind as you write your grant.
  • Plan on rewriting your grant multiple times before you submit your final grant proposal.

Once you have completed your narrative and other grant application materials, you will submit your proposal here in this Canvas course. Your instructor will give you helpful feedback and suggestions for revisions before you submit your proposal in real life.
