Formative Assessment

OTRs don't just increase student engagement in class, they also serve as opportunities for the teacher to check for understanding and formatively assess students at any given point in a lesson.

Chapter 1 in Checking for Understanding, Formative Assessment Techniques for Your Classroom (2nd Edition) by Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey (2014) discusses three phases of a comprehensive formative assessment system. Read until "Know the Difference between a Mistake and an Error," or read the whole chapter if you'd like!
